Great question! Shipping containers are manufactured in China. They are then loaded and shipped one time. One trip shipping containers are known by other names. To avoid any mix up, here are some I have heard:
- New Shipping Container
- One Tripper
- One Ship Container
- One Trip Container
- "New", "One Ship", "One Trip" in front of Conex or Connex or Con Ex (Military term-but often used)
- "New", "One Ship", "One Trip" in front of Intermodal Container (Intermodal means used by marine/rail/trucking-can be ship by any method.)
- PODS ( PODS is really a residential, plastic box that goes back to a warehouse for storage-heavy ads and similar shape have made the term stick)
- ISO Containers
- Intermodal containers
- Steel Storage Container
- Sea cans

You can buy shipping containers used or as one trips. Most major US cities have shipping containers for sale through a dealer or broker.
By the way, new shipping containers are not substandard in any way. They are manufactured to the same tough standards as all other shipping containers, I promise!
One trip units will show signs of one time use. New units have doors that are much easier to operate than used containers. I am a woman-just regular strength, and I can operate these. Most come with factory installed lock boxes for extra security.
New shipping containers are usually tan or gray. They will not have large logos or decals. The photos I have included are typical.
One trip shipping containers are rated to last 20 years for shipping. We have no estimate for how long a new container will last for storage. I have had one trip containers in my rental fleet for 20 years-they still look and function very well. I plan to pass them on to the next generation of our family business-no kidding!

For storage:
One trip shipping containers are excellent for storage. They are portable, secure and clean! Roll off delivery can be arranged to your location.
For shipping:
One trip containers are perfect to ship, but will still require an independent, third party survey. The surveyor will provide appropriate paperwork in your name. You will need this CSC certification to ship your container-yes, even if it is new.
Another bit of free advice prior to purchasing a one trip container for shipping. PLEASE call a shipper first. I know just enough about this to suggest to everyone to begin with the shipper first. This might be a freight broker or a ship line. They will advise you how to go forward. Not to bore you, but if you are shipping for the first time, trucking is a little tricky. A shipper or freight broker will guide you through the whole process.
