Buying a used or new shipping container for storage? Guide to avoid getting ripped off!

40' Custom Shipping Container with Roll Up Doors Added In
There are some expectations you should have when making a container purchase. Here are some standards to keep you safe and informed when buying a shipping container for storage.

1. Can you reach the seller?
Dealers should have an easy to find location, website and easy to reach phone numbers. I don't mind texting, or emailing customers. However, prior to a sale or delivery, I require a phone conversation or face to face meeting. That is just a good business practice.

2. Can you see before you purchase?
Most used containers average over $2000 or more when tax and delivery are added in. In my home or business this is a major purchase. We understand that there is nothing like seeing before you buy. We welcome your visit by appointment-hope to see you soon!

3. Is there any pressure to buy?
I appreciate great service when I purchase anything. I don't like it when I am hovered over or pushed to make a decision. I have great respect for sales people to make a living-but that doesn't excuse slimy, aggressive behavior.

4. Is there any interest to sell?
This is just the opposite of pressure to buy. This is a seller that could care less to follow through. Flaky makes me nervous. Look for someone who gives a darn.

5. Do they know what they are talking about?
Lately I have seen some new sellers that are too confused to give accurate quotes and quality grades. Your seller should be able to explain all sizes, grades and delivery methods. They should lead you through the buying experience.

6. When buying, are you given a time for custom work and delivery?
If a customer visits in person, I make a delivery schedule then. Dates and times help everyone plan on a reliable schedule.

7. If buying in the state of GA, are you being charged sales tax correctly?
I am required to charge sales tax in the county I deliver to. That tends to be 6% to 7%. City of Atlanta is 8%.

8. Is it too good to be true?
If you are seeing equipment way below market price-something is wrong in most cases. I have seen a local dealer sell shipping containers that did not belong to him. I have seen another local guy go to prison for selling stolen units. Don't buy stolen stuff-its just bad for everyone.

  1. Not a lot of buyers would think of it, but I like that the article suggests looking at the shipping container before buying it. If you're planning to use the container to build something like a house or a pool then you want it to be undamaged. In order to ensure that you have to be able to look at and inspect the trailer before purchase. http://www.houstoncontainer.com
