Shipping Container Prices-Location, Location!

20' Storage Container on a Roll Off Truck

Looking to find the best deal on a shipping container? I make my living buying, selling and renting storage containers and storage trailers. I am happy to guide you through the buying process. Today, I will review why where you are can set price.

When I get a call from someone who wants to purchase storage, one of my first questions is, what city are you in? I sell containers in metro Atlanta. However, I do quite a bit of sales in Alabama and Tennessee. I ask where units are needed to see if it is cost effective to deliver a storage container to my caller. There are a few reasons to how location can affect you.

1. Ocean Going-Most containers are made for sea cargo transport. They are manufactured to transport goods all over the world. Once a container hits a port city, then it is moved by truck or rail. Market rules apply here, if you are close to a busy port or trucking hub, there will be more used containers for sale. The further a container needs to travel, the more freight cost is added in.

2. Competition-Are there five storage companies in your area or two? I truck equipment over long distances because I can sometimes beat out the local companies by a lot. Here is a great example:

I recently sold a unit to a customer in Knoxville, TN. This guy had been quoted $3900.00 for a used 20' "as is, where is" box by both local storage companies in his market. I can sell him a 20' unit at $2200, with $450 to paint and $800 to deliver with a roll off trailer. My total price is $3450.00. A whopping $450 less than the local companies. I was very surprised that I could help this guy-he is pretty far out of my usual area!

3. A last word on location, I often buy from private sellers. The greatest challenge I see is being able to get good access to equipment that has been sitting for a long while. I turn down about half of private sellers because I cannot get a roll on/roll off truck into their site. A good deal loses its luster if you spend a fortune in wrecker bills.

I hope this has been helpful to you. If you have any questions, please feel free to call. I often chat with callers that I cannot sell to if they are too far out of my market. I love my job and am happy to help!

Thanks!
