Painting a Used Shipping Container-A How To Guide

45' HC Container
Freshly Painted Used Steel Container
Shipping containers are designed to be incredibly tough for transportation. Nearly everything we buy is exported into the USA in sea cargo containers. The contents are valuable so the containers are designed for reliability.

Having said that, the best possible materials are used to make steel cargo containers. Steel containers are made from Cor-tens steel. To learn more about Cor-tens and its unique properties please click here:

Cor-tens steel is also called weathering steel. It is designed to perform very well in humid marine conditions. Many buyers of used shipping containers ask how to slow down or prevent rust. The best answer we have found is to treat and paint over used conex units. Did you know that paint treatments can last twice as long on Cor-tens steel? Adding paint treatments makes your shipping container easier on the eyes and longer lasting.

There are several methods that may work well on these container boxes, but this is our preferred method:

Remove Old Markings. We do this either with heat or by acid power washing.

Hand Buff All Surface Rust. Yes-this also means on the roof.

Acid Power Wash Exterior. We use a high pressure wash with chemicals.

Since the original writing of this blog, we have added an additional step-we prime the box before we paint. Photos coming soon. :)

Finally, after lots of prepping, we paint!
We use a custom blended industrial enamel.

Lots of work-but so worth it!

Short on time? We are happy to provide our in house paint treatment in your custom color!
